TRAVEL TO CHEM CHEM SAFARI
While traveling in Tanzania on an incentive group tour, I extended my visit to explore and experience the incredible Chem Chem. From Arusha, it was just a short one-hour flight by Caravan to reach Chem Chem. The landing at Chem Chem Airstrip was truly special—flying low over Lake Manyara, we touched down in true wilderness. Antelope ran beneath us, birds took flight, and stepping onto the airstrip with no one else in sight, I knew we were in for a real treat. The adventure had begun. A few moments later, a safari vehicle approached the aircraft. Our friendly guide welcomed us and whisked us away to Chem Chem Safari Lodge, just a 10-minute scenic drive away.

CHEM CHEM LODGE
Located in an oasis on the north-western edge of the Burunge Wildlife Management Area near Lake Manyara, Chem Chem Lodge offers understated luxury in the wild. The lodge features eight beautifully appointed tented suites, including one family suite with two tents, all connected to the main lounge and dining area by wooden walkways.
The unfenced lodge is patrolled 24/7 by local Askaris and offers sweeping views of the savannah, home to zebras, giraffes, and other wildlife. Each suite includes a private veranda and deck for ultimate relaxation.

One of my favourite moments was a guided walk with a Maasai warrior, leading us to a surprise sundowner setup at the edge of Lake Manyara. Watching the sun dip below the horizon while sipping cocktails from Chem Chem’s mobile antique bar was simply magical. Dinners are hosted in different locations to keep things fresh and special – ours was under a sky full of stars. The next morning, breakfast was served under an ancient baobab tree, with hot coffee brewing over open flames and food artfully arranged on a swing. You don’t have to go far for wildlife sightings here, but for more predator and elephant activity, drives to the south and east can be arranged, depending on the season.
Guests can also enjoy cultural visits to nearby Maasai villages and local schools, where you’ll witness the positive impact Chem Chem is making in the region.

LITTLE CHEM CHEM
Nestled among ancient baobab trees, Little Chem Chem is a luxurious bush retreat for wildlife lovers. Here, you might come face-to-face with big-tusked elephants or hear the night calls of leopards and hyenas.
With six vintage-style luxury tents, the camp blends elegance with the authentic safari feel. Each tent is open to the breeze and comes equipped with a drinks station, coffee machine, and everything you need for comfort in the wild. While there’s no gym, a thoughtful “Gym in a Basket” is provided for in-room workouts.

FOREST CHEM CHEM
With just four vintage tents (including one two-bedroom family suite), Forest Chem Chem is only available for exclusive use—making it perfect for families or groups. The rooms are similar in style to the other camps, but slightly smaller. There’s no mini bar, but your dedicated butler will deliver anything you need. Like Little Chem Chem, Forest also includes a “Gym in a Basket” as well as a pool and massage facilities.

WHEN TO VISIT
The best time to visit Chem Chem is during the dry season – June and July – when the weather is ideal, and wildlife viewing is at its peak. However, safari here is excellent year-round. Note: the camps close during April and May due to the long rains.
We only had two nights and one full day at Chem Chem – far too short. Ideally, a 3–4 night stay will allow you to fully immerse yourself in the lodge’s rich wildlife, culture, and peaceful surroundings. Having travelled extensively through Africa, Chem Chem was a standout. Spotting the iconic tree-climbing lions and massive tusker elephants was unforgettable. The friendly staff, outstanding service, and world-class facilities made this a premium safari experience.
But Chem Chem is more than just a safari – it’s a force for good. Every guest contributes to the protection of the Kwakuchinja Corridor and the upliftment of the communities surrounding it. By staying here, you’re part of something truly meaningful.
