The Helderberg Wine Route is a subset of the world-famous Stellenbosch Wine Route situated near the town of Somerset West in South Africa. The vines on the slopes of the Helderberg combine the influences of both a mountain and maritime climate, which produces distinct wines of unmistakable quality. There are more than 30 wineries along this route, each with its own unique methods of grape growing, from 300-year-old historic cellars to state-of-the-art boutique wineries.
These are a few of the wineries waiting to be discovered:
Vergelegen Wine Estate – Established over 300 years ago, this wine estate is a nature lover’s wonderland with its own herb garden, lavender labyrinth and rose garden. The estate’s library is a unique highlight, having books which date back to the 1700’s. Two stunning restaurants beckon with the promise of exceptional food and wine pairings.
Lourensford Wine Estate – This historic estate has been brought into the new age with an ultra-modern cellar which is renowned for its heavenly wines. The estate is a local hotspot, popular for its market that happens every Sunday and every alternate Friday.
Waterkloof Wine Estate – On the slopes of the Helderberg, the Waterkloof Wine Estate follows a minimalistic approach to its wine-making, with a philosophy of producing wines that are as natural as possible. Organic wines have never tasted this good.
