Tokara is located 400 meters above sea level on top of the Helshoogte Pass, just outside Stellenbosch.
High up on the southern-slopes of the Fynbos-rich Simonsberg mountain, with immersive views of their vineyards and olive groves. Tokara has incredible views all the way over False Bay, even Table Mountain on a clear day.
A destination in its own, not only a winery, but modern in design with an artistic flair. Home to an award-winning restaurant with incredible sommelier Jaap-Henk Koelewijn, and a delicatessen and shop. All of the above complimented beautifully by manicured gardens.
A visit to the Winelands is not complete without a visit to Tokara, known for exquisite food and fine wines, which is why we went for lunch and tried out their mouthwatering menu.
Tokara is known for their Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, two of the greatest grape varieties in the world. It is here that you can taste one of their three impressive wine ranges – the Premium Collection, the Reserve Collection, and the Directors Reserve range. Our favorites are the 2020 Elgin Sauvignon Blanc, 2019 Stellenbosch Chardonnay, 2018 Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2017 Stellenbosch Syrah. All four from the Reserve Collection.
These wines complimented our meal superbly, which ranged from the beautiful Cremezola Crème brûlée, char-grilled octopus and beef carpaccio, all the way to the “melt in your mouth’ apple cider braised pork belly. Each dish beautifully plated and so incredibly flavorsome. To end our incredible lunch, a lemon parfait with brown sugar biscuit and Swiss meringue, and of course, the 70% dark chocolate pudding was to die for.
Enjoying all of this while staring out over the lush green vineyards and valley below, was most definitely one of our top dining experiences.
A superb location, incredible food and wine, highly recommended on your next visit to Cape Town.
