Recently, we were invited to embark on the Rovos Durban Safari Journey – a three-day, five-star rail adventure between Pretoria and Durban. This wasn’t just a train ride; rather, it was an immersive journey through historic sites, mesmerising views, and a world of unparalleled comfort and indulgence.

GETTING THERE

Before hopping on Rovos Rail, we flew to Johannesburg and stayed the night in Pretoria. The drive from the Southern Sun Pretoria where we stayed was a short 20-minute drive to the Capital Park station.

THE ROVOS RAIL EXPERIENCE

Rovos Rail maintains impeccable standards across all its journeys, and I was captivated by the timeless elegance onboard. Traveling with them felt like stepping back in time – in the best way possible!

The ambiance was beautifully “old-school cool,” with a unique twist: it’s a no-tech experience. Outside of your cabin, phones and electronics are set aside, allowing you to disconnect completely. For someone who’s always plugged in, this tech-free retreat was a refreshing and welcome escape.

NO-TECH POLICY

The no-tech policy was the perfect excuse to relax and have real conversations. We so enjoyed the time on board, sipping on mocktails, no screens, no distractions! It was just good old-fashioned fun.

SERVICE ON THE ROVOS RAIL

Like all Rovos Rail trips, you can expect 5-star service onboard the trains. The charming “Victorian Chic” atmosphere is everywhere. Every meal felt like an event – from breakfast to lunch, the food was incredible, even with our vegan option. Rovos Rail is all about keeping things local and fresh, so the meals were all traditional African cuisine with seasonal ingredients.

Additionally, all Rovos Rail journeys are fully all-inclusive, so when you hear the charming sound of the dinner bell (yes, a real one!), it’s your cue to head over for a delightful meal. The staff is fantastic, ensuring you’ll leave with a smile.

EXCURSIONS ON ROVOS RAIL DURBAN SAFARI

Each Rovos Rail journey delivers the same exceptional 5-star service, yet every itinerary brings its own unique highlights. On the Durban Safari, the standout moments were undoubtedly the safari excursions, immersing us in South Africa’s incredible wildlife.

Our trip concluded in Durban with a convenient transfer to a nearby hotel. Durban is filled with activities, so it’s worth arriving early to explore the city’s vibrant offerings.

South Africa’s natural beauty is simply breathtaking. On safari, we enjoyed guided walks through diverse landscapes, spotting giraffes, zebras, and other stunning plains wildlife up close.
