Take a Walk in Soweto…

14/03/2018
When visiting one of South Africa’s most renowned townships, Soweto, in the bustling metropole of Johannesburg, your trip will most definitely include a stop at Vilakazi Street, and for good reason…

Vilakazi Street is named after Benedict Wallet Vilakazi, a Zulu poet, novelist and educator, who became the first Black South African to receive a Ph.D. However, this street’s great popularity came from two of South Africa’s Nobel Prize winners, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, and the late President Nelson Mandela, who lived here. Today Mandela’s house is a museum open for public tours, giving visitors an insightful view into “Madiba’s” story in the context of his home. Apart from this, Vilakazi Street is also a social hub, with a number of restaurants where traditional and local urban cuisine can be enjoyed while taking in the Soweto vibe!
