Are you setting off on an African safari and excited about your first open-vehicle game drive experience but aren’t quite sure what to expect? We have some answers to your questions:
- Will I See the Big 5? Nothing in nature is ever guaranteed, but expert field guides and trackers do their utmost to find some amazing animals. But please remember that African wildlife has so much more to offer than just the Big 5, so keep an eye out for the wide array of other interesting and beautiful mammals, reptiles and bird species.
- What’s the Vehicle Like? Game drives mostly take place in open safari vehicles which can get bumpy at times, especially when driving off road. So if you have any back problems we recommend sitting towards the front of the vehicle. The further back, the bumpier it can get.
- The Don’ts? It is important to remain seated and stay in the vehicle at all times. Your ranger will find the perfect sundowner stop for a stretch of legs and a chance to enjoy a G&T whilst taking in the African sunset. And of course, please refrain from loud squeals and keep mobile phones on silent.
- What to Pack? Bring something warm for the game drive. It can get very chilly before sunrise and after sunset. We recommend always packing a warm jacket and beanie-type hat and preferably wearing neutral-toned clothing. Bring a pair of binoculars if you have and don’t forget your camera!
