When driving from Cape Town to Hermanus during the up-and-coming whale season (generally July to November) we recommend taking the scenic coastal road via Clarence Drive, one of the most beautiful routes in South Africa!
The 21km Clarence Drive (R44), stretching from the naval town of Gordon’s Bay to the village of Rooi-Els, is a spectacular coastal drive with exceptional views over False Bay and the Hottentots Holland Mountain range.
When the Southern Right whales make their way to South Africa’s Cape south coast, it is possible to view these majestic giants frolicking in the waters along the shore. With plenty of photo opportunity stops along the way, take a minute to revel in mind-blowing views and look out for surfers waiting patiently for that perfect wave at Kogel Bay.
After Rooi-Els, the R44 will take you through the coastal village of Betty’s Bay where Stony Point is home to one of two shore-based African penguin breeding colonies in South Africa, a waddling sight to behold! For the flora lovers, make a pit-stop at the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden in Betty’s Bay for a stroll amongst South Africa’s diverse and unique Fynbos.
